The Himachal Pradesh Police Department conducts an objective-type examination for the recruitment of Constables (Male and Female), Class-III (Non-Gazetted). The examination is designed to assess candidates’ knowledge, skills, and abilities in various subjects including English, Mathematics, Reasoning, General Awareness, and Hindi Grammar. The examination duration is 02 hours, carrying a total of 90 marks. Below is the detailed syllabus along with the marking scheme and penalty for incorrect answers.
1. ENGLISH (Matric Standard) – 20 Marks
This section evaluates the candidate’s proficiency in the English language. Topics include:
- Tenses: Understanding and usage of different tenses (Present, Past, Future).
- Direct & Indirect Speech: Conversion of sentences from direct to indirect speech and vice versa.
- Change of Voice: Conversion of sentences from Active to Passive voice and vice versa.
- Correction of Sentences: Identifying and correcting grammatical errors in sentences.
- Articles and Determiners: Correct usage of ‘a’, ‘an’, ‘the’ and other determiners.
- Parts of Speech:
- Nouns: Types of nouns and their functions.

- Verbs: Different kinds of verbs and their usage.
- Adverbs: Understanding the usage and placement of adverbs.

2. MATHEMATICS (Matric Standard) – 20 Marks

- Science – Inventions & Discoveries: Important inventions and scientific discoveries.
- Countries & Capitals: Knowledge of countries and their capitals.
- Current Affairs – National & International: Recent developments and events in the world.
- Important Days: National and international observances and their significance.
- Abbreviations: Common abbreviations and their full forms.
- Important Awards & Honors: Important awards like the Nobel Prize, Padma Awards, etc.
- Sports: Knowledge of recent sports events and athletes.
- Geography and Culture of Himachal Pradesh: Geography, culture, and important landmarks of Himachal Pradesh.
- Policies, Programs, and Schemes of the Government: Knowledge of government policies and programs.
5. HINDI GRAMMAR – 20 Marks
This section evaluates understanding of Hindi grammar. Topics include:
- स्वर (Vowels): Understanding and usage of Hindi vowels.
- व्यंजन (Consonants): Knowledge and usage of consonants.
- पर्यायवाची शब्द (Synonyms): Identifying words with similar meanings.
- विलोमार्थी शब्द (Antonyms): Understanding words with opposite meanings.
- एकार्थी शब्द (Homonyms): Words with one meaning used in various contexts.
- अनेकार्थी शब्द (Polysemous Words): Words with multiple meanings.
- संज्ञा (Noun): Different types of nouns and their functions.
- सर्वनाम (Pronoun): Usage of various pronouns.
- विषेशण (Adjective): Understanding and usage of adjectives.
- क्रिया (Verb): Verbs, their types, and usages.

Negative Marking & Penalty for Incorrect Answers
To discourage random guessing and ensure the accuracy of responses, the examination will have a negative marking scheme as outlined below:
- Wrong Answer: For each question where a candidate provides a wrong answer, one fourth (0.25) of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted as a penalty.
- Multiple Answers: If a candidate selects more than one answer for a question, it will be considered a wrong answer, even if one of the chosen answers is correct. In such cases, the penalty of one fourth (0.25) of the marks for that question will be deducted.
- Blank Answer: If a candidate leaves a question blank (i.e., no option is selected), there will still be a penalty of one fourth (0.25) of the marks assigned to that question. This is applicable for questions left unanswered in the exam.
- Multiple Correct Answers: In cases where a question has two correct answers instead of one, candidates who correctly select any one of the correct answers will be awarded full marks for that question. However, if the candidate answers incorrectly or selects both options, the penalty will still apply as per the general rules.
